The figure of the flâneur, a character strolling aimlessly through the city and observing its people, originated in 19th-century Paris as a socio-historical phenomenon and has since become a heterogeneous and variable literary motif. While the flâneurs of the 19th and 20th centuries had been conceptualised as chroniclers and spectators of the city, who transformed their observations into literature, 21st-century flâneurs have undergone some significant changes with regard to their function within the text. Drawing on discourses of mobility, migration, gender and capitalism, the flâneur becomes a focal point in performances of resistance and critique. In this seminar, we will take a closer look at the various way in which the paradigm of flânerie might resurface in Anglophone novels of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and at the functions, topics and formal characteristics that can be assigned to those contemporary flânerie texts.
