In this course we will explore the writings of Oscar Wilde, legendary critic and artist of late Victorian Britain. Drawing on his various literary contributions and essays on cultural criticism and art, we will study the artistic climate of the Fin de siècle, Aestheticism and the Decadence movement. We will read Wilde’s only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, a selection of his short stories, two of his plays (Lady Windermere’s Fan and The Importance of Being Earnest), as well as some of his poetry and his prison writings.
Please obtain your own copies of the following works/collections, preferably in the “Oxford World’s Classics” editions to ensure that we all work with the same version of the text (they are both widely available, well edited, and affordable):
• Wilde, Oscar. The Picture of Dorian Gray. 1890. Oxford UP, 2008.
• Wilde, Oscar. The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays. Oxford UP, 2008.
Alternatively, you may get hold of the following edition:
• Wilde, Oscar. The Major Works. Oxford UP, 2008.
A selection of theoretical texts, short prose, and poetry will be made available for download.
