In recent years the trope of living permanently online and permanently connected has been established as the alleged new normal of social life. With the proliferation of mobile devices and mobile internet, media communication is imagined to be pervasive, ubiquitous and permanent. At the same time, unplugging, pushback or digital detox have become eponymous for strategies against this alleged normality and means of a struggle for supposedly more genuine experiences, more authentic moments and time for oneself to escape the overload of digital connectivity. In a triangulation of qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, ethnography, observations, focus groups) we investigate practices of disconnection and their ongoing commodification (there is an app for that!)as a lens on the struggle of living with and without media when constant online connectivity is considered a default state. The seminar goes through all stages of the research process and is concluded with a research report.
