The female body in Irish society in general, and in Irish literature in particular, was often relegated to being a mere icon of national pride, independence and Catholic virtues. With her book The Country Girls (1960), Edna O’Brien famously attacked this persistent national image of women’s ‘respectability’. In this course we will (chronologically) observe how women’s bodies were and are portrayed in Irish literature and moreover, how their iconic status was undermined in favour of a more complex and genuine understanding of women’s embodied reality. We will read and discuss the first volume of Edna O’Brien’s The Country Girls, Anne Enright’s The Green Road (2015), Donal Ryan’s All We Shall Know (2016) as well as several shorter texts that I will upload on Digicampus.

Anmelderegeln

Diese Veranstaltung gehört zum Anmeldeset "ALW/ELW/NELK: Aufbaumodul BA/LA: PS".
Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 19.02.2024 bis 28.02.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 25.02.2024. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 04.03.2024 und endet am 08.04.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 04.03.2024, 08:00 bis 05.04.2024, 12:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 08.04.2024 um 13:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
