Comment/Description

This seminar approaches the literary period of modernism from a variety of perspectives. We will engage with theoretical as well as literary reflections on what it means to be ‘modern’, trace the historical developments contributing to the emergence of literary modernism as well as the aesthetic consequences of the artistic aim to “make it new” (Ezra Pound). Moreover, we will not only discuss seminal representatives of British and Irish modernism such as Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway and James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, but also broaden our scope towards texts usually not accounted for in traditional introductions to the topic like Mulk Raj Anand’s The Untouchable or the poetry of Una Marson.
Please obtain copies of the following books:
James Joyce. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Norton Critical Editions. Norton, 2021.
Virginia Woolf. Mrs Dalloway. Norton Critical Editions. Norton, 2021.
Mulk Raj Anand. The Untouchable. Penguin Classics. Penguin, 2014.
Sam Selvon. The Lonely Londoners. Penguin Classics. Penguin, 2006.
