Comment/Description

From ghostly encounters to haunted houses, hauntings signify a disruption of linear time, a liminal site where past, present and future merge. In this seminar, the notion of haunting serves as point of entry to interrogate the echoes, traces, (repressed) memories and legacies of colonialism and imperialism in 20th and 21st century anglophone fiction and film. Analyzing Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Helen Oyeyemi’s White is for Witching (2009) and Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (1991), we will examine the different forms and functions of hauntings in postcolonial contexts.

Students are required to buy and read the following novels* before the beginning of the semester:
• Helen Oyeyemi, White is for Witching (2009)
• Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966)

We will watch Julia Dash’s Daughters of the Dust together.

Please note that for the modules EAS-1411 and EAS-1414, this seminar has to be combined with the Ü “Narrative Analysis: Hauntings in Anglophone Short Fiction” (Nadine Ellinger).

*You can work with any edition of the novels; however, page numbers will refer to the following:
