Comment/Description

This seminar introduces the genre of so-called ‘neo-slave narratives’ and their continuous relevance in Anglophone literatures. Following an introduction to the history of transatlantic slavery, we will examine how enslavement has been narrated since the 18th century. Based on study groups and input presentations we will compare the narrative strategies of historical ‘slave narratives’ to fictional ‘neo-slave narratives’ in order to discuss questions of genre as well as shifts in literary and telecinematic representations. We will focus our discussion (in the following order) on Percival Everett’s recent subversion of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884, available via Project Gutenberg) in his novel James (2024, PanMacmillan edition, ISBN 9781035031245), Colson Whitehead’s Underground Railroad (2016, Fleet/Little, Brown Book Group edition, ISBN 9780708898406) and its TV adaptation as a miniseries by Barry Jenkins (Prime Video, 2021) as well as Ishmael Reed’s anachronistic narrative Flight to Canada (1976, Penguin Modern Classics edition, ISBN 9780241315194).

Please note that for the modules EAS-1411 and EAS-1414, this course must be combined with the Übung “Narrative Analysis: Enslavement in 20th and 21st Century Fiction" (Prof. McPherson).
