This seminar approaches British Romantic poetry as a literary laboratory in which questions of imagination, nature, subjectivity, and political hope are explored under conditions of historical rupture and aesthetic experimentation. Rather than treating Romanticism as a unified movement or a retreat into lyric inwardness, the course reads poets such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and William Blake alongside women poets including Charlotte Smith, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Mary Robinson, and Felicia Hemans. This expanded perspective foregrounds Romantic poetry as a heterogeneous field shaped by differing social positions, gendered constraints, and forms of literary labour. Central concerns include the reconfiguration of nature not as passive landscape but as an active, shaping presence; the emergence of poetic voice as both intensely personal and historically situated; and the role of poetry in negotiating between revolutionary aspiration, loss, and ethical responsibility. Particular attention is paid to poetic form—sonnet, ode, fragment, prophetic vision, occasional poem—as a medium through which Romantic poets test the limits of perception, language, and community. The seminar thus understands British Romantic poetry not simply as an expression of feeling or solitary genius, but as a complex cultural practice that recalibrates how individuals and collectives imagine nature, history, and the possibilities of shared life.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 09.02.2026 bis 25.02.2026 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 27.02.2026 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.03.2026 und endet am 06.04.2026.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 01.04.2026 um 12:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.03.2026 08:00 bis 01.04.2026 08:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.03.2026, 08:00 bis 01.04.2026, 08:00.
