Kommentar/Beschreibung

The histories of Europe and Africa are deeply entangled, not least because of European colonialism and its involvement in the transatlantic enslavement trade. African presences in Europe can be traced back to antiquity, yet dominant discourses often frame these as a recent phenomenon in their attempt to construct European identity based on essentialist notions of whiteness. In this course, we will engage with the multiple (hi)stories, experiences and contributions of Black Europe as represented in contemporary anglophone literature, specifically paying attention to questions of identity and (contingent) belonging.

Students are required to buy and read the following novels before the beginning of the semester:
• Esi Edugyan, Half-Blood Blues (2011)
• Caleb Azumah Nelson, Open Water (2021)
Additional materials will be made available via Digicampus.

Please note that for the modules EAS-1411 and EAS-1414, this seminar has to be combined with the Ü “Narrative Analysis: Afropean Short Fiction” (Nadine Ellinger).

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 09.02.2026 bis 25.02.2026 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 27.02.2026 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.03.2026 und endet am 06.04.2026.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen werden am 01.04.2026 um 12:00 verteilt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.03.2026 08:00 bis 01.04.2026 08:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.03.2026, 08:00 bis 01.04.2026, 08:00.
