“[T]his great and monstrous thing, called London” (Daniel Defoe) has been a prominent topic in English literature since the Middle Ages. London texts range from seemingly realistic depictions of the British capital to metaphorically charged re-constructions of real-life London that aim at resistance towards existing discourses of power, and from praises of the city constituting an epitome of civilisation and progress to its condemnation as the centre of crime and horror. In this course, we will take a look at the manifold ways in which the city of London has been translated into text and the modes of representation that this translation entails. Bound up with those modes of representation is a changing perception of the city that reflects the different ways of life in the metropolis throughout the centuries. We will trace the trajectory of this changing perception of the British capital in poems, short stories, plays and novels from the 18th century to the present and link it to questions of race, class, gender and ethics in the metropolis.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 11.08.2025 bis 24.08.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 24.08.2025 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2025 und endet am 03.10.2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2025, 08:00 bis 03.10.2025, 12:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 03.10.2025 um 18:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2025 08:00 bis 03.10.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
