From ghostly encounters to haunted houses, hauntings signify a disruption of linear time, a liminal site where past, present and future merge. In this seminar, the notion of haunting serves as point of entry to interrogate the echoes, traces, (repressed) memories and legacies of colonialism and imperialism in 20th and 21st century anglophone fiction and film. Analysing Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Helen Oyeyemi’s White is for Witching (2009) and Nia DaCosta’s Candyman (2021), we will examine the different forms and functions of hauntings in postcolonial contexts.

Students are required to buy and read the following novels* before the beginning of the semester:

• Helen Oyeyemi, White is for Witching (2009)
• Jean Rhys, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966)

In addition, you’re required to watch:

• Nia DaCosta, Candyman (2021)

Please note that for the modules EAS-1411 and EAS-1414, this seminar has to be combined with the Ü “Narrative Analysis: Hauntings in Anglophone Short Fiction” (Corvin Bittner).

*You can work with any edition of the novels; however, page numbers will refer to the following:

• Wide Sargasso Sea: Penguin, 2001; ISBN: 978-0-14-08180-31

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 11.08.2025 bis 24.08.2025 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 24.08.2025 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2025 und endet am 03.10.2025.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2025, 08:00 bis 03.10.2025, 12:00.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 03.10.2025 um 18:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2025 08:00 bis 03.10.2025 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
