Comment/Description

The seminar will turn to the British Short Story, a literary genre which, since the days of Edgar Allan Poe—whose theory of the short story, or 'brief tale' shall be at the beginning of our discussion—has undergone a significant development. Drawing on earlier examples from the 19th-century, our focus shall be modernist and postmodernist examples of the genre from James Joyce, Virginia Woolf to the contemporary writers such as A. L. Kennedy, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jackie Kay, Ali Smith, Zadie Smith, Hillary Mantel, Angela Carter, Ian McEwan, and John Burnside.

A selection of theoretical material and the short story texts will be made available online in a folder here on digicampus.
