Tracing the development from ‘Robinsonnades’ to imperialist ‘adventure’ fiction for ‘boys’ and ‘girls’, we will survey excerpts from well-known 19th-century texts in dialogue with key studies on Empire in Victorian children's literature. The main focus of the course, however, will be on the relation of newer ‘young adult literature’ to the legacies of colonial writing and postcolonial critique. Focusing on Nigerian(-inspired) settings by authors based in the U.S., we will analyze how Nnedi Okorafor’s Akata Witch (2011), Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone (2018) and Tochi Onyebuchi's War Girls (2019) use the perilous journeys of their protagonists as a means to ‘write back’ to Eurocentric male-centred adventure and fantasy genres. Yet, each of these novels also transgresses the postcolonial ‘writing back’-paradigm in different ways, so that we will examine their respective cultural work in relation to Okorafor's notions of 'Africanjujuism' and 'Africanfuturism' as well as wider debates surrounding diversity in YAL.
