MA: American Modernism
This class will investigate American Modernism via a variety of different media (including photography, poetry, film, and literature). We will explore individual works within larger cultural and political frames, focusing for example on issues of race, class, and gender, which come to the foreground in this period. The era was marked by various radical changes, such as growing urbanism and industrialization, rapidly evolving technology, an increasingly global economy, and global warfare. According to Susan Hegeman, America specifically was “taken to be synonymous with the massified modernity that presented such an object of combined horror and fascination.” The works produced in this time reflect the uncertainties and the struggle of coming to terms with rapid change as well as the task of redefining one’s world, but they also reveal optimism and belief in progress. Moreover, modernist works embody the search for new forms of expression that could capture experiences, voice critique and illustrate disillusionment, as well as give shape to hopes and optimism. Modernism is a significant and vital period for U.S.-America concerning politics, culture and literature, and it had a critical and wide-ranging influence on later periods.
