In recent years, discourses of classlessness in post-Thatcherite Britain have been disrupted by events such as the Great British Class Survey, the Brexit referendum, and the Covid pandemic. Accordingly, issues of class(ism) and socio-economic inequality are increasingly re-emerging in cultural production. This course looks at the re-engagement with ‘class’ in contemporary British fiction. We will explore relevant novels and short stories by established and lesser-known writers (e.g. Zadie Smith, Douglas Stuart, Kit de Waal). Drawing on central theoretical approaches to ‘class’ (e.g. Pierre Bourdieu, Raymond Williams), we will examine how the selected works deal with pressing and recurring themes such as social inequality, meritocracy, and power structures, as well as key questions of intersectionality (class, race, gender, sexuality).
