Comment/Description

The figure of the flâneur, a character strolling aimlessly through the city and observing its people, originated in 19th-century Paris as a social phenomenon and has since become a heterogeneous and variable literary motif. While usually associated with French or German literature, the tradition of the flâneur in British literature has been somewhat contested due to the relative absence of the flâneur as a sociohistorical phenomenon in Great Britain. Nevertheless, a considerable amount of texts featuring characters that might qualify as flâneurs can be found throughout British literary history. In this course we will have a look at the various ways in which the paradigm of flânerie might resurface in British prose, poems and essayistic writings from the 18th century to the present day and the functions, topics and formal characteristics that can be assigned to British flânerie texts.

Please obtain copies of the following texts:
Virginia Woolf. Mrs Dalloway. Norton, 2021.
A.B.C. Merriman-Labor. Britons Through Negro Spectacles. Penguin, 2022.
Jean Rhys. Good Morning, Midnight. Penguin, 2019.
Robin Robertson. The Long Take. Picador, 2018.
