As a way of dealing with the impact of global events such as climate change or Covid-19, we seem to increasingly find ourselves engaged in online (and offline) discussions about the truth and verisimilitude of opinions, statements or (alleged) facts. It apears that talk about so called "fake news" (with all of its multi-layered strands of meaning and connotation) is paramount.
To this end, this seminar attempts to shed some (scientific) light on the debate, adopting a linguistic vantage point, It akes into view the multifarious ways in which the English language encodes and marks (attitudes towards) different types of sources in mundane, everyday as well as institutional forms discourse. The objective of the course sees students exploring different methods (and classification frameworks) which they can apply to systematically uncover the ways in which speakers (and writers) of English aim to substantiate their claims and propositions in a range of different text genres, e.g. political discourse, stockmarket experts, advertisers, spin docters, etc.
