"What is cognitive linguistics? Cognitive linguistics goes beyond the visible structure of language and investigates the considerably more complex backstage operations of cognition that create grammar, conceptualization, discourse, and thought itself." (Fouconnier 2016).
Cognitive linguistics is an approach to the description of language that is based on the way we experience, perceive and conceptualize the world. In this course, we will disentangle the (close) relationships which hold between linguistic and cognitive structures. We will explore the ways in which linguistic structures are entrenched in knowledge structures, best described as categories, schemas and frames. To this effect, topics in course inter alia cover the following:
- Framing politics: Can our use of language affect the way we vote?
- A Cognitive Grammar: Can syntax (SVO, etc.) be meaningful without lexis?
- Cognition & Categorization: Is this word form an adjective or adverb?
- Figure & Ground: The Role of foregrounding in fictional characterisation
- Frames & Scripts: How the way the think, shapes the way we understand
