Comment/Description

This course will present an overview of current developments in the study of modernism, usually subsumed under the umbrella term New Modernist Studies. New Modernist Studies aim at a broader understanding of what constitutes modernity and modernism and claim that a variety of modernities occurred on a global scale at different times and in different places. Consequently, their temporal, spatial and vertical expansion of what is considered ‘modernism’ also involves a theoretical re-conceptualization of ‘modernity’ and ‘modernism’. Ultimately, New Modernist approaches resulted in a revision of the modernist canon, aiming at the inclusion of marginalized authors and groups. In this seminar, we will first focus on theoretical approaches towards a reconfiguration of modernity/modernism and then discuss literary texts representative of a new modernist canon with a specific focus on examples of Caribbean and African Literatures in English.
