Comment/Description

While the Victorian Age is mostly known for voluminous novels, the increased periodical publication practice in the 19th century provided a significant rise of various forms of short prose. This course deals with a number of representative and popular as well as lesser-known short stories (e.g. by Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, Charlotte Mew). By focusing on a broad selection of texts we may examine the emergence and development of diverse genres such as detective stories, science or gothic fiction, and fairy tales as well their formal and thematic implications. In addition, we will cover central themes such as values and morals, class, gender roles, and power structures in the Victorian Age.

All texts will be made available via Digicampus.
