| Sonstiges | In this course, we will explore the theme of the Daemonic in 19th-Century English literature across authors and genres. From the Romantic “Satanic School” to the Gothic novel, the category of the Daemonic expands to include Promethean knowledge and benign intermediary beings as well as dark supernatural figures and (early) vampires. We will begin with the Romantics’ subversion of the Christian devil, their appropriation of Milton’s Satan as a sublime figure and the archetype of the Romantic femme fatale to then investigate Victorian depictions of Daemonic characters in both poetry and the Gothic novel. Theoretical texts and the poems of P.B. Shelley, Byron, Coleridge, Keats and Rossetti will be made available on Digicampus. Please procure a copy of Wuthering Heights and Dracula (consider buying secondhand). |
