More than 400 years after his death, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is still the most-produced playwright in theatres around the globe and his works continue to fascinate a wide audience of theatregoers and readers. Apart from around 39 plays, Shakespeare wrote a cycle of 154 sonnets and several longer narrative poems. This seminar focuses on Shakespeare’s dramatic oeuvre and aims to make students familiar with the major themes, genres and socio-historical contexts of Shakespeare’s plays. To this end, we will read examples of each of the three broad genres of plays Shakespeare’s dramatic work has traditionally been divided into, tragedy, comedy and history plays. We will look at these texts both in connection with their genre (what is it that differentiates a comedy from a tragedy? what makes a tragedy tragic? etc.) and in the context of the Early Modern period, specifically its performance practice, politics and gender relations.

Students must obtain their own copies of the plays we will read (to be decided yet, see the “Literaturhinweise” section above for recommended editions). Simplified English editions are NOT permitted.

Studierende der Anglistik/Amerikanistik und des Faches Englisch können sich bereits während der vorgezogenen Anmeldephase zur Sicherstellung des Studienfortschritts für die Aufbau- und Vertiefungsmodule anmelden. Hierzu wird ein gewisses Kontingent der Kursplätze im Zeitraum vom 12.08.2024 bis 26.08.2024 für die Anmeldung geöffnet. Die Verteilung der Plätze erfolgt am 26.08.2024 um 18 Uhr. Bitte beachten Sie, dass in dieser Anmeldephase Studierende in höheren Fachsemestern bei der Verteilung der Plätze priorisiert werden.
Die allgemeine Anmeldephase beginnt am 02.09.2024 und endet am 07.10.2024.
Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 03.10.2024 um 18:00 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 02.09.2024, 08:00 bis 03.10.2024, 12:00.
  • Diese Regel gilt von 02.09.2024 08:00 bis 03.10.2024 12:00.
    Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
