James Joyce's name is inextricably linked with the notorious 'unreadability' of his literary work. Famously, Joyce himself claimed that scholars will struggle with its complexity even centuries after the publication of his novels. Even though it might well be true that Joyce's work is at times hard to access, it continues to prove a rewarding read for all kinds of readers. This seminar aims at introducing students to Joyce's literary work as well as its cultural and historical background. We will focus on the short story collection Dubliners, the (autobiographical) novel A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man and two selected chapters from Ulysses and trace the development of Joyce's linguistic and formal experimentation, his conflictual relationship with Ireland and Irish identity and his artistic innovation.
Please obtain copies of the following books:
James Joyce: Dubliners. Norton, 2008.
James Joyce: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Norton, 2008.
A reader with relevant materials will be made available at the beginning of term.
